Dear 100 Hour Board,

How many endowed members of the church were in the mob that was responsible for Joseph's death at Carthage?

- missourian

A: Dear missourian,

It's impossible to tell for certain, but almost definitely none. The Nauvoo temple wasn't completed until May 1, 1846, after which the general population of the Saints could receive their endowment. Joseph Smith knew about the endowment as early as 1842, but probably only told members of the Quorum of the Twelve and others very close to him. Since Joseph was killed in June 1844, the only way anyone in the mob could have been an endowed member would be if they were a member of the Quorum of the Twelve that was excommunicated in that time. Nothing I've read indicates that anyone with those qualifications was in the mob.

Props on an interesting question, though.
